Last updated date:2022/3/1

Consultations for admission to a single mother support facility

Single mother support facilities are safe places where mothers and children up to the age of 18 years who are having trouble finding somewhere to live or financial difficulties can stay temporarily while receiving support in their daily lives.
For more information on these facilities and procedures for gaining admission, please consult with the Children and Families Support Division of the ward office in the ward in which you live.

Child rearing allowance

The child rearing allowance system provides an allowance to households with children in which either the father or mother lives separately due to divorce or other reasons. This allowance is intended to help the family become self-sufficient.
The documents you need to submit to apply for this allowance will differ depending on your individual circumstances, so please consult with the Children and Families Support Division of the ward office in the ward in which you live.
Note: There is an income cap on this allowance.

Medical subsidy for single parent families

Single parent families such as single-mother households and single-father households that are enrolled in a health insurance scheme can receive a subsidy under this system to cover part of the cost of medical treatment in the event they have to seek medical treatment due to an illness or injury. This subsidy does not cover costs which are not covered under health insurance, such as hospital beds which incur an additional charge. Eligible patients will be issued with a Welfare Medical Card.
For more information, please consult with the Health Insurance and Pension Division of the ward office in the ward in which you live.

Loans through the widow welfare fund

Eligibility: Single-mother households, single-father households and mothers who were once single-mother households
This loan is provided to single parent families to help the family become self-sufficient. The loan is intended to help parents cover necessary expenses, such as school costs, etc. Please contact the health and welfare center of the ward in which you live if you would like to take out a loan under this scheme.
*1: Your application will be assessed as to whether or not you are eligible for this loan. Therefore, your application may be rejected.
*2: This is a loan that you will have to repay in the future. Please bear this in mind before applying.

Single Parent Support Yokohama

In addition to providing parents in single parent families with job hunting advice along with daily life and child-rearing consultations, other forms of support under this service include legal consultations, consultations relating to divorce, and social events which bring people together.

Daily life support

This system can be used by single-mother households, single-father households, and widows who are struggling temporarily to perform housework, raise their children etc. due to an illness in the family, work or study commitments, or just having got divorced.
A domestic helper will be sent to help you out in your day-to-day life.
For more information, please contact the Children and Families Division, Children and Youth Bureau.

Applicability for deductions for widows (widowers)

In order to avoid creating a gap between unmarried single parents and those who have become single parents due to divorce, etc., the usage fee for unmarried single parents had been determined based on the adjusted amount of tax rather than the actual amount of tax. However, with the revision of the national tax system, "single parent deduction" is now also applicable to unmarried single parent families. As such, "applicability for deductions for widows (widowers)" has ended.
