Overview

Childcare for sick children and childcare for children recovering from illness are services provided to families for when guardians cannot look after children who are sick or recovering from an illness at home due to unavoidable circumstances, including work, illness or injury, childbirth, or having to attend a wedding or funeral. These services are administered by specialist staff such as nurses in designated nursery rooms.
You must register in advance and make a booking to use these services.

Children who are eligible for these services

Childcare for sick children

Children from the age of 6 months to elementary school 6th grade (3rd grade at some facilities)
Children whose illness can be treated on a regular outpatient basis (excluding measles, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (pink eye) and COVID-19)

Childcare for children recovering from illness

Children from the age of 6 months to elementary school 6th grade (3rd grade at some facilities)
Children who are recovering from an illness and do not need to be admitted to or receive treatment at a hospital, but who cannot join group childcare on the grounds that they need to get bed rest (excluding cases in which a child's regular doctor has judged that a child is currently ill)

About COVID-19 (as of October 1, 2023)

Although COVID-19 was downgraded to a Class 5 infectious disease on May 8, 2023, children who test positive for COVID-19 will still not be able to use childcare for sick children.
When your child's regular doctor fills out the Contact Form for Use of Childcare for Sick Children/Children recovering from Illness (Form No. 4), the doctor may conduct an test to make a definite diagnosis. Also, please be aware that when using a childcare for sick children, a doctor at the service provider may conduct another test at their discretion.

Childcare for sick children

Monday to Friday: From 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
*Excluding national holidays, the New Year holiday season, and other temporary closing days at the medical institution which provides this service.

Childcare for children recovering from illness

Monday to Friday: From 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Saturdays: From 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
*Excluding national holidays, the New Year holiday season, and other closing days at the day-care center which provides this service.

Usage fee

2,000 yen per person per day
Please pay this directly to the nursery room providing childcare for sick children/children recovering from illness.
*Households residing in Yokohama City that are in receipt of public assistance, households that are exempt from paying municipal residents' tax, households that have a certificate of welfare medical care for single parent families, etc. are exempt from the full amount. (To qualify, please show a certificate of proof at the nursery room providing childcare for sick children/children recovering from illness, such as a certificate of tax exemption, a certificate of receipt of public assistance, or a certificate of welfare medical care for single parent families.)
*You will be charged cost price for any other supplemental items needed while the child is in care, such as baby food, snacks, diapers, etc. Please confirm the cost and pay directly to the facility in question.
*In the case of childcare for sick children, please prepare a lunch box suited to your child's condition. (Please consult with the facility in question if in doubt.)
Meals are provided in the case of childcare for children recovering from illness (you must pay for these).

Procedures for use

  1. Register in advance at the facility you wish to use.
    Fill in the required items on the Registration Form for Use of Childcare for Sick Children/Children recovering from Illness (Form No. 3), submit it to the facility you wish to use, and follow the instructions you are given.
  2. Check whether you are able to use the facility you registered at.
    You cannot use this service if capacity has been reached and there are no available places on your preferred day. Please check availability for the day in question in advance.
  3. Make an appointment with your child's regular doctor and ask whether he or she is eligible for childcare for sick children/children recovering from illness.
    1. Make an appointment with your child's regular doctor and ask this doctor to fill in the required items on the Contact Form for Use of Childcare for Sick Children/Children recovering from Illness (Form No. 4). (Forms that have been filled in on clinic closing days will not be accepted.)
    2. There is a fee for having a doctor fill in the Contact Form for Use of Childcare for Sick Children/Children recovering from Illness (Form No. 4). (Each user can have this fee covered under their health insurance once a month. Any subsequent forms for that month will not be covered by insurance, so you will have to pay the full cost by yourself.)
  4. Apply to use the facility you registered at, and submit the necessary documents on the day.
    1. Call the facility and book a day and time.
    2. Submit the Contact Form for Use of Childcare for Sick Children/Children recovering from Illness (Form No. 4) and Application Form for Use of Childcare for Sick Children/Children recovering from Illness (Form No. 5) to the facility on the day of use.
